Cecil The Lion & Brother Jericho

UPDATE: Jericho is the "brother" to Cecil the lion that was illegally killed several days ago in Zimbabwe. Jericho is now the caretaker of Cecil's cubs (shown below). Jericho has not been killed as was previously reported by Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, and has retracted their statement due to proof of life from Oxford University Department of Zoology/WildCRU.  Their study lion was Cecil, and they also said that Jericho is alive and well (tracking collar showed normal signs of movement). The department also mentioned that both Jericho and Cecil are not brothers, and that unrelated male lions form coalitions to defend their territories.

Why is this news? For the simple reason that the death of Cecil,  has created the scenario of natural law in lion society: when a male dies and his weakened coalition is usurped, the new incoming males kill their predecessors' cubs. With Jericho standing guard, the cubs should be fine.

If Jericho's dies, it may lead to a cascade of death in the lion community.

Why is this so important: simply because these majestic animals are rapidly decreasing. An estimated 30% to 50% decline in 20 years in the last half of the 20th century. Primary causes of the decline include disease, and human interference. Habitat loss and conflicts with humans are considered the most significant threats to the species.
